5 Tips For When Your Mate Cheats

There is no denying that one of the worst things to happen to the trust in a relationship is when a boyfriend, girlfriend, or spouse cheats.

Not only is it painful, but it can ruin your relationship and possibly the potential for you to believe in any future relationship.

Here are five tips that I recommend using to help you get past the pain quicker and in a more healthy way...

1. Allow Yourself To Grieve
Give yourself permission to feel angry, sad, and even to cry about what has occurred. Infidelity is a violation of an agreement between two people who made a decision to be honest and faithful. So give yourself some time to mourn a trust that has literally died.

2. Allow Yourself To Forgive
While you will never forget that you have been cheated on, you need to also decide that at some point you will need to forgive your partner. Not because you want to make him feel better. And not because you just want things back to the way they use to be -- but because the anger you hold onto will only affect your life and your future relationships. Forgiving him or her is the best thing that you could do for your own sanity.

3. Continue Living Your Life
It may be tempting to stay in bed and eat ice cream sundaes all weekend - but that could potentially lead you down a slippery slope of wanting to stay in bed another day, another week, another month -- i.e. depression. You really should continue living your life as normally as possible and stay connected to your friends and family.

4. Write A Letter
There's nothing better than getting your feelings out. Trouble is - is that many of us freeze up when it comes to verbalizing our true feelings in front of our partners. That's when journaling or writing a letter to your mate (even if you don't send it) becomes a great way to relive yourself of negative emotions and feelings.

5. Don't Reciprocate By Cheating Yourself
I know you may be tempted to do as he or she did. Perhaps to show that you can do it too! Or perhaps to hurt him or her as badly as you were hurt. But cheating to get back at your partner, only adds more fuel to an already big bonfire. If you are even considering working things out -- this will not help matters no matter how unfair you may think it is. And even if you are not going to reconcile -- do you want to stoop to his/her level to prove something? To prove that you can stoop low? No - this is an act you may end up regretting in the long run. Take the higher ground and keep your bedroom door closed!
