A Letter For Awareness Dear Health Friend, I experienced the early days of AIDS in San Francisco from 1980 on. I am HIV negative myself but because many friends died I attended the very first San Francisco Town Hall meeting dealing with AIDS in the early '80's. The City Public officials and several AIDS researchers were there. Many in the audience wore paper bags over their heads so as not to be recognized. Hollywood, the nation's Political leaders (including Ronald Reagan) and the general public ignored it and blamed the gay community for AIDS. The gay community came together and established nearly all of the AIDS organizations in existence today. Some of the gay rights organizations converted to AIDS organizations to help educate and fight for political and financial backing to fight AIDS. Many of the early leaders died and the general public is still largely ignoring this pandemic. We need leaders and we need people to fight against this disease.
