About Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis effects over 2.1 million Americans. RA is a crippling and painfull disease. There is no known cure a this time. And the treatments are quite limited. This disease is not noticable when it first starts, but through the years when the crippling begins then you can see the effects of RA.

This disease tends to make the suffers feel very alone in their situation. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of support groups and/or awareness out there. So when you mention you have RA, a lot of people really don't understand it.

This disease effects women more then men. Not to say men can't get it or won't because they can.

Main symptoms of RA are redness and swelling within the joints. Pain and a grinding sound when moving major joints - like the knees. This disease is considered an automimmune disease. Which means, that the body naturally develops antibodies to fight off infections or other bad things within the body. But when a person has RA, the antibodies actually are confused and attack the joints instead.

If diagnosed early and treatment is started early - you can actually slow down the progression of damage within the joints. If you do feel that you might have symptoms that are similar with RA, make an appointment with a doctor right away. They have blood tests they can run to determine if you do have RA or not.
