As a website owner who's helping other small and home businesses to promote their sites (and since I love to shop online myself), an eye-catching banner or button can make you curious and entice you to visit the site. I wanted a free banner rotator for my site and researched several before finding AdRotate.net. I've used it for over 4 years and have been thrilled with the functionality, features, and reliability.
Here are some of the major benefits:
1) completely free to use - there is no fee until your page views surpass 5000 per day.
2) unlimited number of banners to add - AdRotate also accepts plain text ads.
3) banners and buttons can be grouped and there is an unlimited number of groups you can create
For an example of groups, I have a group with only 125 x 125 size buttons for my Featured Affiliate spot which rotates through the affiliate buttons. I have another group with 125 x 125 buttons for my Please Vote for Us spot which rotates through my top sites buttons. I have another group for my 468 x 60 banners.
4) easy to use - simply add a java script snippet to your web pages.
5) easy to update - there's a very easy user interface where you enter the banner url link, size, destination link, andalternate text.
For entering text ads, the interface is slightly different, but very similar.
6) capability to add advertisers and have pay-per-click - if you'd like to use the system to have advertisers pay you to host their banners, this functionality is available.
7) any size banners can be used
8) compatible with Commission Junction, Linkshare, and other 3rd party affiliate banner systems
9) only your banners are rotated and displayed - some other banner rotator services will serve their own ads in addition to yours at a ratio of maybe 80% yours, 20% theirs. AdRotate shows only your banners.
One of the negatives that I've encountered is that you can't see views for a specific banner ad. It appears that this was taking up too much bandwidth and eliminating the ad views is one way of keeping the service free.
The last note is that the service is still in Beta. You must apply and be accepted to use the service. I have always found the owners to be extremely responsive, however, if I've had any questions or feedback for them.
