All About Acne Skin Care Treatments

There will probably come a time in the not too distant future where the condition of acne (Zits) will be completely curable; although it undoubtedly causes distress, a number of topical remedies are available. Owing the widespread nature of this condition, scientific research into this area is intense; this is good news with the range of effective skin care treatments improving all the time. We can classify acne skin care products into 3 broad categories:

Preventative: Creams, lotions etc. to help cleanse and tone the skin
Over-the-counter
Specialized: on-prescription acne products

General or preventative acne products form a large section of the skin care market; these include cleansers, make-up removers and other similar products that can help prevent the condition. Many people use products similar to this every day as part of their skin care regime; many use these products to protect their skin from the environment even if they do not have the acne condition. More specialized cleaners are designed in the same way as acne skin care products; they ensure the facial pores (and other areas) remain free of oil. When the pores become clogged with this oil, bacteria which can cause the problem begin to grow.

This type of skin care treatment also includes those which exfoliate such as skin peels; these are easily obtainable in any drug store. These work towards removing dead skin cells, reducing the possibility of pore-clogging and bacteria development. The growth of the skin care market has allowed even more specialized acne skin care products to be available without the need to visit the doctor. Most of these creams etc. are based on benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, both of which are the enemies of bacteria (and hence acne); these include products which extract the unwanted oil from the skin.

Generally it is best to start using this type of product with only a small amount of benzoyl peroxide (less than 5.5 percent is recommended), just to see how the skin reacts; if a reaction occurs, a cleaner or cream containing alpha hydroxy acid should be safe. As with any type of zit cream, you may need to try a few acne skin care products until you find one that will suit your skin; if none of them work then you would be advised to contact your skin specialist. Only doctors or skin care specialists can prescribe some medications, including the use of antibiotics and certain ointments.

In more serious cases your skin care specialist may decide that a small surgical procedure can be used to remove the oil and infection from your pores; specialists never recommend the sufferer tries this themselves as it can cause permanent skin damage. Another effective course of skin care treatment is hormone therapy; hormone changes are known to be one cause of acne. The end result is dealing with this skin complaint is not the problem it once was, there are now a huge range of products specifically formulated for the task.
