Your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) indicates the number of calories your body needs each day to simply perform basic functions. It is the energy (measured in calories) expended by the body at rest to maintain normal bodily functions. You expend energy no matter what you're doing, even when sleeping. Thus your Basal Metabolic Rate is the number of calories you'd burn even if you stayed in bed all day.
The Basal Metabolic Rate decreases with age which basically means that as you get older, it gets that much harder to eat food and stay slim without increasing the amount and intensity of exercise that you do. And, the taller and heavier a person is, the faster their metabolism is.
A simple way of working out your BMR is to take your weight in pounds then multiply it by 24. Then divide by 2.2 to work out how many calories you need in a day.
An example is: If you weigh 180 pounds, this multiplied by 24 is 4320. Then divide it by 2.2 = 1963.63.
This means you would need 1963 calories a day to maintain your current weight.
So, to lose weight all you need to do is eat less than 1963 calories a day.
