Basics of Alexa website rankings
If you want to find out how popular any website is according to Alexa, you can go to www.alexa.com, enter the URL of a website and get that sites Alexa ranking. As an alternative, you can download and install the Alexa toolbar into your browser. The Alexa ranking system is not entirely accurate; it's system uses an algorythm that works from a web browser toolbar add on, and sites are then ranked by visits in which web users have added the toolbar. Most internet users that have the toolbar installed are usually people that are based in web marketing, design & SEO, so the information and data used by Alexa is not truly random. With the toolbar in your browser, you can instantly see the Alexa ranking of any website. Alexa uses a ranking system in which the lower the number of ranking, the better, so many webmasters and SEO people base their Alexa "success" on lowering their Alexa ranking. For example, Yahoo is usually ranked 1, meaning that it is pretty much the most popular website on the internet. In comparison, Google's "PageRank" uses a system where the higher the rank, the better. |
