Best Affiliate Program Features
If you're a small business owner looking for additional ways to advertise, offering an affiliate program is a great way of getting others to advertise for you. First, there are 2 kinds of programs (although some businesses are starting to blur the lines). The traditional affiliate programs have you sign up, post a link on your website and as many other places as you creatively can without spamming, and earn commissions on sales through your link. The traditional representative or consultant programs have you buy products at a reduced price, then you resell them at their normal retail price, and earn the commission. Businesses are now offering combined programs which is getting very confusing, but here are the features I like best: 1) free to join 2) free affiliate link or mini-website 3) multi-size banners and buttons available - preferably 468 x 60 and 125 x 125 4) no sales quota 5) optional sample kits available - I like to be able to buy samples and product so that I can try the products and show them to others, but it's not a major influencer in my decision to join. 6) sales commission - I've seen anywhere from 3 to 30% depending on the price of the items sold and the average order size. 7) buying at a discount (getting my commission up front) - it's nice but not necessary. 8) catalogs available - it would be more important for the traditional representative programs than for the traditional affiliate programs. 9) offer coupon codes and customer sales frequently - it's much easier to advertise a business when there's an exciting special that you can offer a potential customer. I've also seen a trend which I like. Some businesses are now offering different affiliate structures. For example, a basic affiliate would earn commissions on sales. Then a premier affiliate would earn a higher commission but would buy a kit, pay a signup fee, or have a sales quota. |
