Brain Stroke

A brain stroke is a cardiovascular disease that affects the blood vessels of the brain.A stroke is caused by a blockage of blood vessels of the brain causing a loss of oxygen and often resulting in severe neurological damage and death. After heart diseases and cancer, stroke is the third most frequent cause of death and the leading cause of disability in the western world. It is believed that over two million people suffer a stroke every year. 20% of patients die while a large part of the remainder are left permanently disabled.

When a person is disabled due to stroke it is important to begin a therapy routine as soon as possible.Patients should exercise to activate the process of recovery and neural re-organization.A program of 30 to 60 minutes, 4 to 6 times a week is a good start but start slow and add to the program when the patient feels ready. Make wellness a way of living that highlights such preventative measures as eating a balanced and healthy diet.Make exercise and self care decisions that will improve the quality of your life.

Most neurologist believe that if they can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours that a lot of the effects of stroke can be reversed. The trick is getting the stroke recognized, diagnosed and getting to the patient within 3 hours which is tough. There is nothing more life saving than getting the patient to the hospital in the first one hour.Becoming known widely as the golden hour to doctors and emergency attendants.

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a person can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions.

Ask the individual to SMILE.

Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)

If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks call Emergency immediately.
