Bringing your dogs to the beach

f you're like me vacation just would not be complete without bringing my 4 legged companions. I know that is very true for many people who vacation. For those of us traveling with dogs extra preparation is necessary to ensure humans and canines alike have a safe and good time.

Vacationing with your dog at the beach is very much like vacationing with your dog anywhere but the beach does add a couple elements into the vacation equation. Bringing your dog on vacation with you prepared can save you a lot of headaches and money. All of the towns of the Outer Banks have some varying form of leash law. Be sure not to leave the house without them. Also, your dog is in an unfamiliar place as most likely are you. It is better to have your friend leashed than running into the street or worse highway.

Another item I will not travel without is a 25 foot steel lead or cable for each dog. This item is especially important if your planning on doing any camping on the beach. Nothing is more unpleasant for you or your friend than to have no room to move. The 20 or 25 foot gives them just enough room without them being able to get in trouble.

This reminder may seem unnecessary but remember most of the time when you're at the beach it's summer and it is hot. One precautionary detail is remember how hot the sun can be on your feet, then think how your dog has no shoes. This is especially important in the months of July and August when the temperature reaches the 100+ degrees.

Along with the summer heat is perhaps the most important tip for you and your 4 legged friends. Drink plenty of water. Again, drink plenty of water. You know when you are thirsty, having fun on the beach we don't always pay attention to how our companions are doing be sure they have lots of cold water and even better lots of ice.

A last tip about the beach is if you notice your dog limping remember how nasty sand 'burrs' can be on your feet. Take a minute and pick a good route without vegetation if you want to keep your and your friend's feet 'burr' free.

Hoped those few tips suit you well. Get prepared before you come so when you're here all your time is spent enjoying paradise.
