Capitol Building In Denver, Colorado

Elijah Myers was the architect that designed the Colorado Capitol Building and also was the designer for capitols in Michigan and Texas and those buildings all had a similar style of the capitol in Washington, D.C.

The Colorado Legislature at the time passed a resolution that as much of the building as possible be consructed of materials from Colorado but was compromised by a contractor who was discovered using cheaper Vermont marble in some areas than that available in quarries in Colorado.

The Dome of The Capitol was copper when the Capitol was built but was soon to oxidize and turn color. In 1908 the dome was covered in gold leaf donated by the Colorado Mining Association and has re-gilded several times. An interesting side note is that the whole dome can be covered with a chunk of gold about the size of a half a stick of butter.

Not many people know about the rich history of the Colorado Catitol Building and so it gives me great pleasure to share some of the unique past with you today.
