It started snowing before 10:00 A.M. in Columbus on Friday and did not stop until after 4:00 on Saturday, March 8, 2008. According to meteorologist Ben Gelber on Channel 4 News, the NBC affiliate in Central Ohio it was a historic storm with accumulations from 10" to 20" inches throughout the region.
An airplane landing at Port Columbus skidded off the runway overnight. No one was hurt.
Franklin County was a level 2 snow emergency but many of the surrounding Central Ohio counties were level 3, including Delaware County. By Ohio Law when a level three snow emergency exists you can not drive. Only emergency vehicles are allowed on the roads during a level 3 snow emergency.
Friday many schools and businesses closed early. I drove from Westerville to the Polaris area in the early afternoon after making a stop in Worthington, very slow traffic. Some stores in the Polaris area closed early.
Saturday the snow was a blizzard with white outs in Central Ohio and most people stayed off the roads. Malls were closed. Events were canceled. Channel 10 TV (CBS) covered the weather non stop until noon or one. Channel 10 News showed traffic cams. It looked like there were mostly semis on the interstate and not a lot of them. Watching out a second story window (until the snow drifts on the garage roof got too tall to see out), it was mostly SUVs on the unplowed residential streets.
Columbus should be back to normal soon, it's only twelve days to spring and we really don't usually get this much snow. This one will go in the history books.
