Cutting Your Own Hair

People always ask me, "Who cuts your hair?" They are always shocked to hear that I cut my own hair. I've been doing it for about 10 years now and it just comes natural to me. So, I thought if there are any people who ever wanted to learn to cut their own hair, then here's their chance to learn how. It's really not that hard and I will take you through the very steps I take to cut my hair.

If you're wondering just how I ended up cutting my own hair then here's a little background info. I've never been really comfortable getting my hair cut at a barber shop. The whole idea of being placed right smack in the middle of a room on a chair that gets pumped up to a height where your feet are dangling, and describing to a complete stranger how you want them to cut your hair really never made sense to me. I mean there you are, being stripped of the only thing that makes you look good besides your face, and hoping that this "professional" hair trimmer person can get it exactly the way you want it, all the while you get spun around in the chair as the customers waiting in line stare at you. After several attempts of going to the barber shop in hopes of finding the one that could cut my hair just right, I gave up and said to my self I'll just cut it myself.

Alright, so here are the same exact steps I take to trim my hair every 2-3 weeks. Like I mentioned before cutting your own hair really isn't all that difficult. You might need to take your time the first few tries. It might even take you about an hour or so but think about it this way, if you're anything like me you won't have to worry about the barber shop ever closing down, paying money to cut your hair, or even having that favorite barber die on you ever again because you are your own barber now. Okay, so let's get started. First I'm going to make a list of what you will need. Here they are:

- Hair clipper
- Scissors
- Comb
- Hand mirror

Here is the most obvious and basic technique you should follow. Depending on whether you're right-handed or left-handed, keep the trimmer on that appropriate hand since that will have to be the most steady and controllable hand you will be using. Keep the mirror on the other hand.

*In addition to the small hand mirror, you will need to be facing a mirror, like the one in your bathroom. As, long as the mirror is big enough you can cut your hair anywhere.

1. I always start on the bottom and work my way up. So, depending on the type of style you want you may want to follow this advise.

2. Get you hair clippers and attach the appropriate cut level adapter.

3. Slowly slide the clippers to the hair on both sides of your head.

4. To cut the back hair, grab the hand mirror, turn around and look at the reflection on the hand mirror and trim away.

5. To blend your bottom hair with your top hair just go up two levels, trim the side and back part of your hair. You might have to go over the same area more than once depending on your hair type but it should blend nicely.

That's all there is too to it. Remember, don't worry if you don't get it right the first time, I didn't either. Just practice it for some time and you'll get it right. If curtting your own hair isn't for you then hey....more power to you. Just test out different local barber shops and I hope you have better luck than I did finding one.

I share your distate for barbershops but lack your courage and industry. Which is why my hair hasn't been cut in years n years.

I wouldn't really call it courage. I just made the decision 11 years ago that I would never allow anyone to cut my hair again. Once I figured out what looked good for me I just perfected my technique. Whatever cut I give myself only applies to me. It's not like I can duplicate it for someone else if they asked me to do the same for them.

You say that you haven't cut your hair in years. If that's the look you like then, hey....keep it long. I remember having my hair long, but it just didn't look that good on me. If you felt a bit hesitant to cut it, this is what I would do. You actually have a lot of hair, so you can actually experiment without worrying too much about doing it wrong. Just lift your hair up and cut it underneath. If anything comes out wrong, the hair on top would just cover it up. Give it a try if you really want to practice. Thanks again for the comment.

I've cut my own hair for about 20 years now, must have saved me so much money, I do my son's hair too.

It's nice to hear that I'm not the only one doing the same thing. Makes me feel kind of normal. Thanks for commenting.
