Motorised trolley on its way to stardom: By CHRISTIAN BONNEVIE - Manawatu Standard | Thursday, 26 June 2008
Duncan Everson has earned international media attention because of the 50cc shopping trolley he built.
From the papers to the big screen - Duncan Evenson and his shopping trolley are on the path to stardom.
Media worldwide are clamouring for a piece of the 19-year-old mechanic and his motorised cage, among them an American producer who wants him to appear in a feature film.
It's been a hectic 48 hours since Evenson first hit the Manawatu Standard front page with his home-built machine on Monday.
He has been interviewed on radio and television and was today set to do a photo shoot with an Australian news agency.
This journalist even had to take on the role of personal assistant after the cheeky Feilding lad initially gave his name as Duncan Ferguson to throw other media off the scent.
It didn't work.
"I just don't know what's going on, it keeps escalating," Mr Evenson said from his work garage yesterday.
"It's all a bit stressful. You see that green car over there, I'm meant to be fixing that but it's pretty tough with all the phone calls coming in."
The daughter of his local bank teller was even using his story for her current affairs project, he said.
While a little overwhelmed with all the publicity, he admits it is "a bit of a laugh" and the opportunity to show his face in a film would cap it all off.
American company Nite Owl Productions has signalled it wants to get some footage of Mr Evenson cruising city streets and use it in the mockumentary film Shopping Cart Commandos.
