East Timor's police and military accused...

The have been accusations made against East Timor's police and miltary, that they indulged in beatings and torture during the state of emergency that existed following the attacks that wounded and nearly killed President Jose Ramos Horta, and killed rebel leader Alfredo Reinado.

A report by the Ombudsman for Human Rights has detailed eight different incidents of beatings, unlawful detention and harassment by the police and the military, but parliamentary sources have claimed the figures to be much higher.
