Epic Movie an Epic Let down
Well, Airplane! it ain't.
Unlike the great farcical comedy from 1980, which remains timeless and hilarious to this very day, Epic Movie barely registers a giggle or a guffaw from anyone over the age of seventeen. It's a film that tries way too hard to be funny, and the results are awkward and uncomfortable, at best.
In the vein of Scary Movie and Spaceballs, Epic Movie spoofs a menagerie of well known films, including Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle and The Chronicles of Narnia. Kal Penn, who starred in Harold and Kumar, plays one of the four central characters in Epic Movie, and that duality is touched upon somewhat comically in this film. Penn's character, Edward, is joined by fellow orphaned siblings Lucy (Jayma Mays), Susan (Faune A. Chambers), and Peter (Adam Campbell). Together, they set forth on a journey originated with the discovery of four Golden Tickets (sound familiar?).
The actors are a quality breed, young but capable. Mays works her ingénue appearance to her best advantage. Chambers is underutilized and seems to be cast as the "token" black character, which is a shame since she seems to have the best grasp of timing in the cast. Campbell could be the long lost twin brother of Topher Grace, except for his delightful (and real!) English accent. And Penn, always funny, did his best with material that stacked the odds firmly against any form of hilarity.
It was difficult to discern whether the comic timing issues are the result of a lack of chemistry between the actors, or a directorial flaw. Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer wrote and co-directed this film, as they did the Scary Movie franchise. But where Scary Movie incorporated crudeness in a way that made it laughable, Epic Movie seems to randomly place it in peculiar spots. It feels as though this movie was written one night on a whim, and never got a second draft.
A film is in bad shape when even the impeccable Jennifer Coolidge can't make it funny, and that is precisely where this movie falls. You always know where you're supposed to be laughing-the motivation is simply not there. This film is a last ditch attempt to enter a genre in which classics are made. Not every concept works as a farce, and this film creates a prime example.
