Fragile X Syndrome

Fragile X Syndrome is the most common cause of inherited intellectual disability and the main known cause of Autism.

Affecting both male and female, Fragile X can result in a variety of symptoms and degree of severity, including mental impairment, attention deficits, anxiety, epilepsy and autistic behaviors.

Females, having a second X chromosome to help compensate, are often less intellectually impaired than males but tend to suffer more severely from emotional and anxiety problems.

A long face, flat feet and large ears are typical features in those affected as are hyperextensible joints, especially fingers.

About 1 in 259 women and 1 in 800 men are carriers of Fragile X Syndrome which affects 1 in 4000 males and 1 in 6000 females
