Granite Countertops, Marble Sinks
While I was in Greece two years ago, our guide Anna told us an amusing anecdote. There's a lot of marble in the hills around Athens, right? There's the lovely Parian marble that the Parthenon is made out of, which has a little iron in it so that the white acquires a faint color with age that can be pink, rust, or gold depending on lighting. Well, you'd think that would be a luxury, like granite countertops and corian are in America. But it isn't. Poor people in Athens have marble sinks. The rich people get metal or plastic, because then, if you drop a plate or cup, it won't shatter on impact. I was thinking of this during my homebuying process, when I kept hearing how this home and that home were special because they had new granite countertops. Whoopie! Honestly, I do see why they are valued, but after Anna's story I couldn't help remember that one person's must-have luxury is another emperor's birthday suit. |
