Visiting Central Oregon in the spring or summer is always a treat. The sun shines in this region an incredible 300 days of the year. By mid-April and May, daytime temperatures can reach the mid to upper 60s, which is perfect horseback riding weather! If you are a visitor to the area, which includes the cities of Bend, Redmond, Sisters, Prineville, Madras and La Pine, you may wish to do as some of the locals and don a cowboy hat and boots. Central Oregon has a rich history in ranching. Many large tracts exist just outside of city growth boundaries, from 80-160 acres, or more. Driving along Highways 97, 20, 22 and 26, you are bound to see grazing horses, cattle, llamas and goats.
There are two main places that people like to visit for horseback riding: Black Butte Ranch and Sunriver. Both resorts are well-known, having been planned and developed in the 1960s and 70s.
Black Butte Ranch is to the west of Sisters, along Highway 20. It is approximately 10-15 minutes from the town of Sisters, popular with tourists because of its western theme facades on all buildings within city limits. Upon entering the main driveway of Black Butte, you will see an immense meadow in front of you, with stables to the left. Horseback riding is open to the public; you do not need to be a guest at the Ranch. However, children under 7 are too young to ride. Reservations are required for trail rides. Half-day and full-day rides are offered with a wrangler guide. The stables open at 8:30 a.m. Call 866-901-2961.
Sunriver is located about 20 minutes south of Bend, off of Highway 97. The stables are relatively easy to get to, after winding your way through several roundabouts and the main commercial center. Again, riding is open to the public. For young children and toddlers, pony rides are available, starting at 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. These are offered on a first come, first serve basis. Half-hour to 8 hour long horse rides are also offered. Reservations are required for these trail rides. Call the Sunriver Stables at: 541-593-6995.
There is nothing like the beauty of the Central Oregon landscape. Experience on horseback and really take home a piece of the culture and history!
