K9 Equipment

K9 Equipment - Training Police Dogs

Training a police dog is much more than just teaching a dog to hunt and attack. They have to be taught all sorts of things, including obedience and agility, and there is a variety of K9 equipment used for this training. This article will cover the basic pieces of K9 equipment commonly used for training police dogs.

A strong, comfortable dog collar is an essential piece of K9 equipment. Choke collars are typically preferred during training exercises because they give the trainer more control. Choke collars constructed of nylon are very comfortable to the dog because they don’t catch in his fur. Stainless steel choke collars are typically the most durable type of training collar. After training is complete, a harness custom fitted to the dog is usually used during work.

Another important piece of K9 equipment for training is a sturdy lead. Most police dog trainers use two leads, one of adequate length to allow the dog some freedom and the other short and strong to give the trainer complete control in vital training exercises. Leather leads are usually the most popular because they are flexible and very sturdy and durable. The right training lead for your dog should have a well made clip to attach to the collar to prevent breaks during training. The right lead is essential to successful training.

Grip developers are the K9 equipment pieces used to train police dogs to properly grip their target. These training tools are typically made of jute and feature a durable handle to use in training exercises. Grip developers are designed for both adult dogs and puppies.
Police dog trainers often use a whip during training. There are many different styles of training whips available, some with padded handles and others simple sturdy sticks with whips made of leather or jute.

Tugs are also great tools for training police dogs. Most trainers use a variety of tugs for grip training exercises, as well as a un way to reward the dog for a successful session. Tugs are available in many different materials, including jute, linen, and leather. Certain dogs may prefer a particular substance so it is best to try several types.

Police dog trainers use a few pieces of K9 equipment during training for their own protection as well. Protection sleeves are must have training tools for those working with police dogs. A good protection sleeve fits the trainer’s arm well and offers plenty of flexible padding to allow the dog to get a good grip without harming the trainer. Some protection sleeves offer adjustments for a better fit and most feature an integrated bite bar for extra protection.

Muzzle protection fighting vests are also used by most police dog trainers. This protective K9 equipment covers the trainer’s body to prevent harm during close, aggressive training exercises.

There are several different types of K9 equipment and several styles and versions of each. For the best training results, experiment with various equipment and find the tools that work best for you.
