Key Ocean Resource In Decline
Whale Feeding Ground Threatened by Trawling and Pollution
The Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary off the coast of Massachusetts is home to a extraordinary diversity of marine life. But trawling and draggers, ship collisions, overfishing, pollution and global warming are damaging the priceless habitat. At Stellwagen Bank, where nutrient-rich waters meet the light of day to create a very diverse food pyramid, right whale, fin, humpback, minke and 18 other marine mammals come to feed from mid-April into October. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) has proposed a Stellwagen Bank Management Plan. The proposal lays the foundation for restoring and protecting the sanctuary's ecosystem.
