Key Ocean Resource In Decline
Whale Feeding Ground Threatened by Trawling and Pollution The Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary off the coast of Massachusetts is home to a extraordinary diversity of marine life. But trawling and draggers, ship collisions, overfishing, pollution and global warming are damaging the priceless habitat. At Stellwagen Bank, where nutrient-rich waters meet the light of day to create a very diverse food pyramid, right whale, fin, humpback, minke and 18 other marine mammals come to feed from mid-April into October. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) has proposed a Stellwagen Bank Management Plan. The proposal lays the foundation for restoring and protecting the sanctuary's ecosystem. It recommends actions that should be taken now, and some that should be considered in the near future, for this special place. Latest news articles resource references: My View: Critical steps to saving Stellwagen Gloucester Daily Times, USA - Jul 11, 2008 By Sean Cosgrove To those who live in and around Gloucester, it is no secret that Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary is a valuable natural resource ... Contributor's Note
Here's what supporters are saying: Our water systems, especially the oceans, are so important to all life on this planet. we need to do better in guarding these precious and limited resources. we won't get multiple chances . . . Please do all that you can to mitigate this dreadful situation. What affects the animals will also affect people. We need to act now. By protecting valued ecosystems, we protect ourselves. We are all one, living together on one planet. We need to respect what nature affords us. By supporting the rebuilding of Stellwagen, we are on our way to a healthier planet.
