La Iglesia de San Ysidro

Several years ago,I decided to paint a series featuring some of the beautiful old adobe churches around New Mexico. I began with La Iglesia de San Ysidro located in the village of Corrales. I painted this in 1998 and then due to new directions in my life, abandoned work on this series of paintings. I am now ready to resume the series and would like to learn a bit more about the history of these beautiful old buildings as I paint them.

La Iglesia de San Ysidro, or the Old Church, as it is sometimes called, is located just off the main road in Corrales, on Old Church Road. This little narrow winding country road actually passes along the back of the church. This church was built around 1868. It is built in a cruciform, or cross, shape and has adobe walls that are three feet thick.

It has been through many renovations through the years. In the early sixties, it was deconsecrated, and for several years was used by a local theatre group. Since the seventies, it has been managed by the Corrales Historical Society. It was added to the National Registry of Historical Places in 1980.

These days, the church is a landmark for various cultural activities in the area, such as arts and craft shows, concerts, festivals, classes, etc.

Even though my painting of this church was completed ten years ago, it continues to be a favorite place of mine to sketch and photograph.
