Learning A Language

Almost all people at some stage in their lives have aspirations to learn a language other than their mother tongue. Work, travel and sheer enjoyment are common motivations. Speaking of which, the common consensus is that motivation is the key factor in successfully learning a language.

Which language people choose to learn is determined by many factors, many of which are personal. Using number of speakers worldwide is one criteria, with Chinese, Spanish , English, Bengali, Hindi, Arabic, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese and German being the top ten (in that order). One might learn a language to equip oneself with marketable skills, in which case being able to bridge the langauge-gap between existing and developing economies might be a good idea.

We are not entirely sure how humans acquire language, but given time and diligent study, most people can attain proficiency. Devotion of time and effective learning methods are essential when studying languages. A language school, audio tape or a book are the most common ways to learn, but a combination of them is optimal. Having a partner also helps with motivation and consistency.

Learning a language takes a fairly long time and requires constant practice, but is rewarding and fun!
