Lightning

Hey Y'all,
I bet most everyone out there has heard somewhere that when you see a lightning strike, count the number of seconds until you hear the thunder and that is the distance. Well, that's wrong. Sound is pretty dang slow, but it's not so slow that it travels 1 mile per second. I'll tell you the exact equation for it.

So, the speed of sound is 770mph. Divide that by 3600 (60 squared) and you get 0.2139mps. So that is about 1/5 of a mile per second. So, if sound travels 1/5 of a mile per second, then in 5 seconds, light would have traveled 1 mile. So the equation is: t/5=d Where t=time in seconds and d=distance in miles.

That is the way to do it. When I first started, I was way off, but I finally figured it out. I first came out with this equation: 760t=d Don't ask how I did that.
