Living on an Island: What Happens when Airlines Cut Flights
Reduced flights out of St. Croix as of September, 2008 Thank goodness we love this place, because soon, it is going to be more difficult to get out of here! The number of flights leaving St. Croix will be reduced by 57% come this Sept. Our governor has established a team of public and private individuals to try to pro-actively address this issue - including talking with some discount airlines to try and get more flights to and from St. Croix. But as we all know, these things take time. So - it may be a slower than average season for us here this year. With prices of our utilities going up, flights going down, we may be in for a bit of an economic hit - especially those of us who depend on tourism and vacation renters for a portion of our income. Guess that means that there will be more "closed - gone to the beach" signs in the windows around here! 2008 may be the year for us islanders to take a break and more fully enjoy this beautiful place we live in!
