Make Cut Roses Last

When receiving a bouquet of cut flowers, or more importantly roses, it is helpful to know a few tricks to keep that expensive gift fresh and beautiful for as long as possible.

Roses should be cut with a sharp knife or scissors and then immediately placed into cold water. Some florists even cut roses under water to prevent any air from entering the stem which will promote wilting. However you choose to do it, don't leave them laying out on the table or countertop once they are cut.

Most floral arrangements or bouquets come with packets of "food" to mix into the water. I suggest not adding the food to a vase of only roses as this tends to make the roses open more rapidly.

Never set any floral arrangement in sunshine- they like it as cool as possible and be sure to replace some of the water in the vase each day with more cold, clean water.

If after a few days some of the roses are dead or wilted, discard the bad ones and re-cut the others. They might perk up and your bouquet can be enjoyed a bit longer.
