Making a Pot

Making a Pot
Making a pot is pretty simple, but you have to know what you are doing. One of the most important things to know is how to work the clay. You will need to work the clay to soften it up and work any air bubbles out of it because air bubbles explode when they pot is fired which will either break a piece of the pot or the entire pot. For the actual making of the pot you can either do a finger pot and just mold it from a small ball of clay or if you want to do a bigger pot you will use the coil method and make a coil pot.

Coil Pot
To make a coil pot you will need a nice sized flat surface with either and old rag on top or nothing at all on it, but make sure the clay is not too wet then, because it will stick to the surface. You will then take a piece of clay and roll it into a long cylinder and place it on the clay base or start a new base using that coil. You will then need to coil it around and around working your way up. Each time you work your way up a level be sure to you a fork and score the top side of the last level and then the under side of the new coil. It the clay is not really that moist you will need slip(a mixture of clay and water) and you will simply put that on the fork while scoring.

Once you have reached the top, make sure the opening is not to small. if it is you will need to smooth out the coils on the way up. If not you can smooth the coils after you have finished. Now you let it dry out, and then fire it and glaze it.
