Making SEO Mistakes
Everyone wants their website to be found. Unfortunately, not everyone knows how make that happen. Many website owners have been trying to optimize their own sites rather than hiring a knowledgeable SEO Specialist to do it for them. As I look over potential client websites, some who have tried to work SEO themselves and some that have just hired designers to create their sites, I am seeing more and more some common SEO mistakes. Here is a brief list of the more popular SEO faux pas. Lack of Quality Content: Any SEO Specialist that knows anything about search engine optimization will tell you that you MUST have quality content on your site. I find it amazing how many site owners expect to get ranked well when all they have on their pages are images, a list of links and advertisements. You must put up informative, well written content if you expect to be found. Remember this mantra: Content, Content, Content. No Keyword Research: Do you know what your potential clients are searching for when they enter phrases on Google? Do you know how much competition there is for specific phrases? If you don't, and most site owners I talk to don't, then you should not be optimizing your site. You need to do your homework before optimizing your site. Title Tag: The Title Tag, found in the <head> section of your site is one of the most important elements in search engine algorithms. Don't waste it by including just the page name, such as 'company information' or the company name. Include keyword reach, page relevant phrases. Overuse of the Keyword Meta Tag: You will not get ranked well but stuffing all of your relevant phrases into the keyword meta tag. Although this was once a common practice and the tag used to be very important, it is almost never used any longer in search engine algorithms. Non-Spiderable Navigation: It sure can look nice and make your website seem as if it had been built by professionals, however, if the only navigation you have on your site is JavaScript, you will not rank well. Although Google claims that they can now spider some JavaScript navigation, most of the engines will not. This means that your pages will not get indexed and will not be found by potential clients. You will also lose out on an important element of the search engine algorithms, hyperlink text. Image Navigation: Although the engines will find your pages, you will be missing out on the chance to put quality phrases into your hyperlink text. Search engines can not read text within images. All Flash Website: If your site is strictly Flash, regardless of the quality content, you most likely won’t rank well. The search engines can not read the text within the Flash site. If you are determined to have a completely Flash site then make sure you create an affiliated HTML site. |
