MANAGING SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDERS - SADS

RJJ
These disorders are loosely defined as mood disorders triggered by the changes in light levels of the seasons, and/or changes in seasonal weather conditions.

The more commonly known WINTER SADS is related primarily to lower light levels as the days shorten.

Not as well known, or recognized is SUMMER SADS, which is related to the hot, humid conditions of summer weather.

There are a myriad of symptoms and combinations of symptoms that manifest in those that suffer these seasonal conditions. Some of the symptoms can include: lethargy, irritability, depression, inability to cope with daily life, aches and pains all over the body, inability to concentrate or to cope, changes in appetite, weight gain or loss, sleeping more or less than usual, memory problems and many more.

There are a plethora of strategies that can be used to manage those symptoms.

The main goal to achieve with Winter SADS is to increase the light levels entering the eyes and compensate for the shortened day light. Many sufferers find relief by using a high intensity light box or lamp for a few minutes each day. These are usually prescribed by a physician, purchased at a Medical Devices retailer and must be used as advised to avoid permanent damage to the eyes. Modern models of these devices can be a small lightbook or a large multi purpose lighting fixture that can be switched from regular light to therapeutic light. Light levels vary between models. The higher the light level of the device, the less therapy time is required daily.

Rather than purchasing the device I was advised to, I purchased large numbers of 'day light' compact flourescent bulbs and installed them in ALL of the light fixtures in my home. I continued to use my lights as was my usual habit. I made that change in the autumn of 2006. At that time, as an added therapy, my physician also advised me to take 1000mg of Vitamin D daily. Since beginning this 'whole home' light therapy and the vitamin D therapy I have had complete relief from all symptoms of Winter SADS.

With Summer SADS, coping with the overheating and humidity are the chief objectives. Strategies which assist the body with cooling and easing breathing help with this. Ceiling fans, window fans, and air conditioning are all options. Cool showers or baths or swims are also helpful. Taking regular exercise and keeping fit improve circulation, cooling, lung function and breathing ease. Wearing comfortable, well fitting clothing constructed of natural, breathable fabrics helps tremendously. Keep well hydrated with cool, not cold water, and maintain a diet high in fresh vegetables and fruit. Keeping the body alkaline helps it function well and with ease, and that reduces heat stress.

Reduce consumption of caffeine, sugar, alcohol, and sodium as these all agitate the bodies functions, can raise body temperature and reduce it's cooling abilities. Red meat and fatty or greasy foods have the same effect.

Maintaining a healthy body weight is also helpful as the extra stored energy acts as insulation and prevents optimum cooling.

Massage therapy, including lymph drainage treatments can remove stored toxins and fluids from the body, improve metabolism and endocrine function and help re-balance a faulty 'temperature control system'. This goes a long way towards reducing or completely relieving the symptoms of Summer SADS and many other physical disorders.

Medicines are not the answer to managing the SADS disorders. Lifestyle changes must be made to improve overall health and change the conditions that bring on the symptoms.

I have found the attached links VERY enlightening and helpful in my quest to manage both of the above conditions.
