My Five Rules of Management Recently, I sat down to evaluate why I have had such great success in my life.
Think about it. I have been to 38 countries, all 50 states in the United States, lived in Europe, gone to college, married (still married to the same person - 42 years), two wonderful children, 2 grand children, 100's of friends and 1000's of acquaintance's all over the world. Now, I call that success.
How did I do it?
I have a system. (Sure, you do loser.)
I have always done only what I wanted to do. (Call me selfish.)
I have always tried to encourage other. (Call me selfless.)
I have always tried to be fair. (Call me stupid.)
I have always been a three year old (Call me ignorant.)
So do you want to be me?
Well, you can't. You can only be you and only you can live your life. In life you have to deal with what is in front of you. Not the past. Not the future.
When I was in the Army, I had a great time.
When I was in college, I had a great time.
From the first job until I retired at 55, I enjoyed every job.
I am thankful for every year, day and moment I have enjoyed.
Every day at 65 I jump up excited, ready to begin a new day.
I am 100% positive. I have only great fun filled days.
I've worked as a soda jerk, bag boy, grocery stock person, busboy, waiter, legal investigator, photographer, cinematographer, artist, photoartist, assistant manager, manager, owner, real estate salesman, real estate broker, business adviser, consultant, job placement counselor, wine salesman, wine teacher and wine consultant. These are all jobs I got paid to do and I loved doing every one.
How did I do it?
I have a system. I understand money, I understand people. I understand myself. I know what I need. I know what I want. And I know what I desire.
The first rule of management is:
You have to have a system. No system, is still a system just a system without direction.
The second rule of management is:
You have to organize you system. I could write a 1000 books on organizing your system, but I will tell you this, it is rule number 3.
The third rule of management is:
You have to prioritize your system. What is most important. What is it that will fulfill your needs. Not your wants or desires.
The fourth rule of management is:
You need to delegate the responsibility of your system. Who is going to take charge? Who is going to be accountable? Where does the buck stop?
The fifth rule of management is:
Follow up. Did it get done? Why and Why not? Then reinvent your system until you get what you want.
