New Zealand's popuation has increased to 4,262,900 according to the latest report from Statistics New Zealand. It is an increase of 40,200 from the end of March 2007. The extra number during March 2008 was mainly due to an excess of births over deaths of 35,500. At March 31, the median age of males was 35.4 years and for females was 37.1 years. The rate of population growth was highest in the 65 years and over group at 2.4%, followed by a 1.0% increase in the 15-64 year age group.
