Northern Fundraisers Unite!
Living and working in the north of England has some real advantages, for example: cheaper housing, less road congestion, stunning countryside, great people and a strong sense of identity being some of them. However, we do also suffer with certain disadvantages, amongst these being the London-centric attitude of many of the larger charities, suppliers and institutions. Too often, fundraisers based in the north miss out on training and conferences, even free ones like the Institute of Fundraising’s recent “Legal changes to fundraising” series sponsored by a London law firm at breakfast time in central London. The cost of time, travel and events (as well as sometimes needing overnight accommodation) often make it impossible for those in the north to attend. We’re also aware of an occasional feeling that anything that’s not held in London obviously can’t be as good. With this as a backdrop, the Institute’s three regional groups in the north: Yorkshire, the North West and the North East have begun to collaborate on providing joint events of a standard that matches that of London, but at a location and price that will not exclude members based in the north from attending. These events will be promoted under the name of the Institute of Fundraising – North. We hope to provide two events a year, with each region hosting an event in turn. This makes specific events closer to some members each time, but by using the Manchester – Leeds – York – Newcastle rail link as the “route” along which they’re held, each event will still be easily accessible and close enough for a day trip. Our first venture will be in Manchester on Tuesday 16 September, with the first Northern Legacy Fundraising Conference, featuring amongst others, Richard Radcliffe and Stephen Pidgeon, as well as some of our “home-grown” legacy specialists, including yours truly!’ At £70 for IoF members and £90 for non-members it’s a snip! The booking form can be found at the same link as the conference details. Watch out for future events to be announced. |
