One-Pack - One-Part Inorganic Zinc Rich Primers - How They Can Help Your Business

For those steel fabricators and industrial painters that have used multiple-component zinc rich primers, you know how difficult the mixing process of components can be. You also know that if your mixture is not correct, a failure in the total coating or paint system can occur. This can be quite expensive when calculating the cost of the zinc primer, intermediate coat (which is usually an epoxy), and a urethane topcoat. In addition to having to buy all those gallons of product over again, you have to go back and remove the failed coating usually by an expensive SSPC-SP6 (Commercial / Sand Blast) surface preparation method. If that's not bad enough, you also lose all of those dollars tied up in labor when you originally applied the coating system the first time. And let's not forget, the time it takes to go back and complete the job over again can certainly be a strain on your business. If you are completing this work for a customer, you might even lose this customer resulting in even more lost revenue.

Another problem with inorganic zinc rich primers with multiple components is you have to use all the material that has been mixed within a certain period of time. For instance, you might mix a four gallon kit, but after completing the paint application you find you have only used two gallons. The remaining material will go bad before you need it again. This can be quite expensive as well because as we know zinc coatings are expensive on a per gallon basis.

Now enters into the industrial painting world the one part / one pack inorganic zinc rich primer. You don't have to worry about mixing the dust or getting the mixture correct, because you have a one-part product that only needs aggressive agitation before application. Even better, this type of product can usually be re-sealed and used at a later date. This alleviates the problem with wasting material, which is of course, very expensive per gallon.

This can be a very profitable move for your business if you go to a one-pack / one-part inorganic zinc rich primer. It will save you money on wasted gallons and possibly future mishaps with mixing. Cross-reference the paint supplier with the product you are using to make sure it will meet the performance levels of your current zinc primer. Another way to check quality is to look at the Master Painter's Institute specification #19 (this number is for an inorganic zinc rich primer).

In any case, take a strong look at moving to this type of product to ease headaches and increase profitability in the long run!
