passion for hair pt3 (the cuticle & hair irons) So you want that hair that looks effortless? Well let me tell you it takes plenty of effort. The key is keeping the cuticle in tip top condition. Do this and your hair will shine like a godess! Your cuticle is the very outer layer of the hair shaft. If you have fine hair you will in fact have around 5 layers of cuticle. if your hair is corse then you will have around 12 layers of cuticle. Each layer of cuticle lays like fish scales all the way up your hair shaft. when the cuticle is laying nice and flat, your hair will be strong, shiny and it will look amazing. When your cuticle is open it will be dull, it will tangle and it will get damaged in no time at all. It is also totally transparent. Any colour you see in hair is underneath the cuticle. Want that perfect hair I keep going on about? Then use hair irons. Yes thats right - I said use hair irons. But (and here is a tip for all you girls that use hair irons on your hair) Only use irons that have “100%” ceramic plates. CERAMIC COATED PLATES ARE NO GOOD. You may as well be using metal plated irons. So if you are purchasing/using irons, make sure the plates are ONE HUNDRED PERCENT CERAMIC. and let me tell you why… Hair is negatively charged and metal is positivly charged - so, when you run metal irons over your hair, the hair gets attracted to the plates and you get A LOT of static. Even more importaintly the cuticle is pulled open. We dont want that. Ceramic on the other hand, has a negative charge - the same as hair - so when you use ceramic irons on your hair, it is repelled against the plates. This forces the cuticle shut. Shut cuticle equals strong, shiny, tangle free hair. Heres the catch - You can only use the irons once a week. Do this and I PROMISE your hair’s condition will improve. Any more than once a week and all the heat you are applying to your hair will adversly affect the condition. (If you have corse hair then twice a week max) I personally use GHD (good hair day) irons, as not only do they have 100% ceramic plates, but they also have a microchip that controls the temperature of the plates. This means that they dont cool down as you run them over the hair. (irons without a chip in cool off as the hair absorbs the heat from the plate meaning a less even finish!!) So Iron your hair once a week and this is in fact much like applying a treatment to your hair. Treatments shut the cuticle. this is why traetments are better than conditioners. Conditioners just sit in the gaps of the cuticle making it FEEL smooth but will washe away the next time your hair gets wet.
