I was completely impressed to learn that this was more of a visual course. The ability to watch the videos online and interact was a plus. Watching the videos online is simple and do not require any additional plug ins to watch. All I had to do is press play and the video began. As I clicked a note it was played. I was able to hear exactly how the note should sound. As the chords were played in the video, the appropriate keys were pressed and then would light up. This process made it extremely simple for me to follow. To make sure there were little confusion the instructor uses a cursor to highlight situation that required special attention.
I definitely recommend this course for beginners; however, as a substitution to a more technical course.
The secret patterns technique that drives this course is one that in my opinion can be found in most courses. Nevertheless, Piano By Pattern is top notch in my book when it comes down to teaching students how to read music, recognize chords and appropriate keys and how each chord should sound.
What makes this program so astonishing is its videos. The videos are precise and very clear. The only problem that I found with the videos is that it did not show me hand placement over the keys. Which, in my opinion is very important. I would have been more impressed if it included in the video hand placement techniques or at least clips of where your hands should be placed. Learning to play the the keyboard in my opinion is like learning to type on a computer. You can learn where each number or alphabet is at, but without accurate hand position you can never be an accurate typer. You may have the concept, but with mistakes and slower speed.

My Grade
It is my formal opinion that Piano By Pattern is a A-. This is an great online piano course and its method of learning was quite interesting. Though this course works well standing alone, I believe it would be much more powerful as an addition to a more complete course. I was impressed with the quality of the videos but truly disappointed that there were no instructions regarding hand positioning. The course would have been an A+ if it would have at lease included snap shot of hand coordination. Therefore, I feel that with a little minor changes the course will make it into the laps of every pianist wanting to advance their skills. The course has great potential and gets the job done, quickly and successfully.
