Promoting a citizens action group

Getting people to participate in a neighborhood watch or any other kind of citizen action group can be a daunting task. In the case of a neighborhood watch in particular, people tend to show up when their dander is up about something. It's a lot like getting people to a union meeting or a political rally. If all hell has broken loose and they're ticked off, they show up en masse and want "SOMEONE" to do "SOMETHING". Convincing them that *they* are the 'someone' is a real trick, and convincing them that 'neighborhood watch' and 'vigilante squad' are not synonymous can also be difficult.

In our local group, we are fortunate to have some very smart people with very flexible schedules in charge. What can I say? We voted smart! ;-)

These folks take the time to attend city council meetings and meet with local government officials and service agencies. They do have an impact. If more residents of the neighborhood would go with them when they can, we could move mountains!...or at least City Council, which may actually be harder to do. ;-)

So how *do* you get folks to participate? Brag, baby, brag. If your little group with just a few active members makes any progress at all on any issue at all, notify the media. Toot your own horn. People like to be associated with a winner.
