Protect Your Identity Online
No doubt about it, surfing the web is fun, but did you know that anyone with the right tools can find out who you are and were you have been if you do not take steps to prevent this from happening? This can happen even when your system doesn't contain any of the spyware, malware or viruses that track this information. All it needs is a simple cookie to be added and the issuing website can track your personal habits as you move from one site to another. So how do they get all this information and how do you prevent it? Well, the good news is that you can definitely surf the web anonymously if you want to. Saying that, the methods are not 100 percent fool-proof, but they make it much harder for people to know who you are or what you're doing. The tools we're talking about are called anonymous proxy servers that help protect your activities online. They can be used to hide your IP address which will mask your identity. Your IP address is a unique number which is assigned to you by your ISP when you connect to the internet. When you browse to a website, your computer and the website communicate with each other, using IP addresses as a way to ensure they are talking to the right computer. This means that any activity associated with your IP address can be associated with you through your ISP. Anonymous proxy servers substitute your IP address for one of their own, hiding any link between you and the sites you visit. Where can we get proxy severs? There are many places to get hold of anonymous proxy servers. A quick search online will give you a decent list, but a few you can try are FindNot, ShadowSurf and Guardster. FindNot is a paid service, Guardster provides both free and paid services. ShadowSurf is a good choice and it is free. Access the site and use the box to type the URL that you want no one to track. Is this the ultimate answer for online anonymity? No, but it's about the best you can do at the moment. As an additional precaution, you can delete any cookies after each session online. If you're really going for it, you can also disable javascript, java, and active content to increase safety and privacy. Be careful with this though as you'll find many websites don't work very well. |
