Puerto Morelos (Mexico)
some Rough Guide Updates (pages 560 & 561)
============================================== on the positive side - its a good thing that the Rough Guide sectionon Puerto Morelos section is small and incomplete - the locals don’t really want the world coming and interrupting their way of life - but having just spent 2 weeks in Puerto Morelos, we believe that the Rough Guide could be more useful.
Not many people can currently stay in Puerto Morelos, because there just aren’t enough beds - however just south of the Caribbean Reef Club a new development called El Cid have started building resort facilities for up to 2,000 tourists within the next 2 years. There is some local resistance, but it seems inevitable that Puerto Morelos will become another Playa del Carmen … and the newly elected mayor is seeing loads of dollar signs !
SECTION page 560 : Puerto Morelos and around
The taxi ride from Cancun airport to Puerto Morelos is no longer “slightly cheaper than to Cancun itself”. Buying a ticket for the ‘authorised’ taxi service at the airport to Puerto Morelos now costs 400 pesos (twice the cost of travelling into Cancun).
The return trip to the airport from Puerto Morelos using a local taxi will be negotiable, but should be around 250 pesos.
ADDITION page 561 : 1st paragraph
Puerto Morelos has several new, excellent restaurants opened within the last year that should be mentioned for completeness.
Johnny Cairos (just along from Las Palmeras), Coyote (on the square), and Big Johns (just along from the Police station) are all extremely good (i.e. at least as good as, if not better than, Los Pelicanos).
There are several fast-food places now as well like Palapa Pizza (opposite Coyote on the square).
Also worth noting is that since Puerto Morelos is small fishing village, freshly caught fish & lobster can always be bargained for in the afternoons on the main jetty (especially useful if you like raw seafood - or you have access to cooking facilities).
CORRECTION page 561 : 1st paragraph
Note that Rancho Libertad is a Bed & Breakfast only, and they rely on guests looking after themselves for all meals except breakfast (i.e. using the common-area cooking facilities, or going into town for a restaurant meal).
ADDITION page 561 : Caribbean Reef Club
The Caribbean Reef Club is an ‘all inclusive’ resort and is for couples only (i.e. they have [quote] “a swinging lifestyle thing” happening).
COMMENT page 561 : The Town
The Rough Guide reviewer obviously ended up at the Amar Inn with Sandra & Dan, and didn’t actually visit or talk to many of the other local establishments - we didn't believe that “The best place in town” label was appropriate, or necessarily warranted.
