Radioactive space junk.(newly discovered space junk from breakup of nuclear-powered Russian satellites threatens artificial satellites)
About 600 miles out in space, hundreds of satellites constantly circle the Earth. They help in: * the navigation of ships; * predicting weather; * studying changes on the Earth's surface; * telephone communication. But a growing cloud of space junk now threatens to disable some of the satellites. The U.S. Space Command is tracking more than 8,000 orbiting objects about the size of a softball or larger. Space litter includes parts of worn-out satellites, dead payloads, paint flakes, and at least one screwdriver.
