Real Snow

When my children were about 5 and 8 years old, we traveled from Florida to New York for Christmas. Because they had been born in the South, their excitement about going to Grandma's house was only surpassed by the hope of seeing snow. Unfortunately snow in Upstate New York in December is very iffy. One morning we awoke to find a white dusting of flakes over the grass. The kids in their excitement immediately had to go out and make "snow angels" which to tell the truth were greener than white.

My sister invited us to Northern Pennsylvania to see snow in the mountains. While there we found some that was a few inches thick. My kids loved it but for me, that wasn't real snow.

When there's real snow, you can walk where no one has ever stepped. You can see where the deer ran through and where the bunnies hide. Real snow crunches under your feet and when the sun comes up, sparkles like a thousand diamonds. It covers over the pine trees making each one fit to grace a Christmas card. In short, real snow marks your soul.

My kids didn't know all this and were satisfied with the few snowballs they pitched and the paths they created but I knew the difference. I hope some day they get to feel the satisfyingly sore muscles that are the trademark of shoveling snow. They need to enter a snug house and feel like their cheeks don't move because of the cold. I don't want them to have so much that they grow tired of it, just enough that they will know when they see real snow.
