Remedies – When Traveling With Pets

I know when you are traveling or camping with your pets you can get into problems. Here are some handy tips and remedies you can use on the road if you are prepared.

SKUNK ODOR REMOVER
1 bottle hydrogen peroxide
1/2 bottle water
1/4 C. baking soda
1 tsp. dog shampoo
Mix hydrogen peroxide with water. Add baking soda and dog shampoo. Mix and pour into a squirt bottle/sprayer. Spray entire bottle onto dog, being careful not to get it directly into his eyes/nose. Let everything stand for 5-10 minutes while working the solution into his fur. Rinse...your dog will have NO odor

HOT SPOT RELIEF
Scalding water
1 black or green teabag
Dip the teabag briefly in scalding water. Remove the tea from the water and let it cool to a comfortable temperature. Press it gently against the hot spot for a few minutes while holding and petting your animal. If your pet will allow it, tie the teabag in place with a strip of cloth and leave it on the hot spot for up to 1 hour.

HAIRBALL REMEDY
If your feline routinely coughs up hairballs, try rubbing a bit of mineral oil or petroleum jelly on the back of your hand or directly on the cat's nose, and she or he will lick it off.

DOGGIE SPOTS
Blot up as much moisture as possible. Rub with a solution of vinegar or lemon juice and warm sudsy water. Blot and blot some more. Then pour straight club soda over the spot. Blot again. Place a dry towel over the stain and put a heavy book on top of it. If the towel becomes soggy, immediately replace with a clean, dry towel.

DRY PET SHAMPOO
1 C. flour
1 C. cornmeal
Mix the ingredients and pour them into a container roomy enough to hold the pet - a large paper box for a big pet or a deep roasting dish for a small pet will work. Place the container filled with the mixture in the bathtub and gently place your pet into the pan or box. Rub the mixture, by handfuls, into your pet's fur until all the goo or oil or mess has been absorbed. Gently brush the mixture out of the fur. Be careful to keep the mixture out of your pet's eyes, nose and ears. Dispose of the used

CANINE "SWIMMER'S EAR" FORMULA
Clean the ears with this solution after swimming.
Juice from 1/2 lemon
1 C. lukewarm water
Add lemon juice to water. Using an eyedropper, apply it into the ear. Gently massage the ear canal (this feels like a small plastic tube in the area underneath the ear) from the outside. Allow your dog to shake its head, and then blot up extra moisture with cotton balls.

ANTIBACTERIAL POWDER
(for dogs and cats)
1 part golden seal powder
1 part garlic powder
This is to prevent and treat general infections, parasitic infections (such as ringworm or mange), or hair loss. Mix together and store in a covered jar. Apply freely to any sore or abraded area where bacteria might become a problem.
