Restaurant Review: The Town House, Emeryville, CA
When my wife and I are hunting for a special lunch or dinner, we often go to a restaurant in Emeryville, California called The Town House. Years ago, this used to be a "speakeasy." Now the restaurant consists of one large dining room with a bar at one end and the kitchen, which one can see partly but not totally into, at the other. The best way to describe the food would be to call it "upscale California cuisine." Lots of lamb, beef, fresh fish and salads are on the menu, which changes every day according to what is fresh and available. As an appetizer, we usually split an order of calamari. In the Town House's version, the calamari is deep fried, but done so dusted with a cornmeal-based batter that is delicate and not overwhelming. One order of this is really enough for two people. One of our favorite entrees is a salad topped with warm lamb. The Cobb Salad is large and delicious, too. In fact, though we have been eating here for quite a few years, we've never had anything that wasn't done just right. Som,etimes you'll find an unusually delicious stew on the menu. The portions are generous enough so that when dessert time comes we are usually too full to be able to eat any, even splitting something between us. Those times when I can remember having dessert, it has always been one of the chocolate confections, which are excellent. The service is friendly and attentive. The last time we ate there for lunch, the tab was around $45 for the two of us. We had the calamari, a main dish for each one of us, coffee, but no wine or alcoholic beverage. Comparing what one gets at many other restaurants with what we received, we thought the price for such excellence was very reasonable. |
