Restaurants in Halifax, NS - Il Mercato As Italian restaurant in Halifax go, you could do far worse than Il Mercato; you could also do a bit better by visiting their former sister restaurant of DaMaurizio, but you will take a heftier hit to your pocketbook in doing so. Il Mercato has two locations in the HRM: one in downtown Halifax and one in the Sunnyside Mall, Bedford - the same menu is offered at both. The menu at Il Mercato is extensive and covers first plates, pasta and entrees, as well as a beautiful dessert display. The only downside to both locations is the acoustics - the place is loud and you can expect to strain a bit to hear your dining companions. So for our purposes we often go for the take out option. For a great starter, try their snails on crostini. A delight with a sauce to die for, these are my favourite snails in Halifax. The warm red cabbage salad with bacon is another sure winner, as is their marvelous wild mushroom soup. For lunch, the soup and accompanying bread will more than satisy. The star of the pasta plates would be the chicken ravioli in mushroom sauce. The serving is small by North American standards, but perfect for the Italian diner. Just enough of these soft shells with the wonderful sace - you will want to mop up every last bit with your bread.The seafood spaghettini is another marvelous dish, with smoky undertones and a mix of shrimp, scallops and mussles in the shell. After enjoying your meal, check out the dessert window - and be sure to save some room!
