Schools Expectations

First of all don't get me wrong-I know our children need an education. But in New York atleast the expectations on our children are getting higher and higher. Some children have no problem with the harder academics-while others struggle. Not all children fit in the same categories. I feel New York state for one keeps piling on more credits needed, harder Regents exams which leads to more homework.
When I was in school we had the choice of a Basic diploma or a Regents diploma whereas now all kids are expected to achieve a local regents or a state regents. With the added pressure I see this creating more drop outs and more kids with less self esteem. Even a child who is advanced feels the pressure of hours of homework-when are they supposed to be able to just be a kid? They are in school 6 1/2 hours a day-some now don't even get a recess, just a 20 minute lunch as our schools feel kids in 7 grade and up do not need that time. Then they come home to sometimes more than 2 hours of home work. I think the pressures on todays kids are a lot greater than the pressures we had to endure. Even kids as young as 1st grade are coming home with homework more than 1 night a week.
I feel that kids should still be able to be kids, and the ones that struggle shouldn't fall through the cracks just because they are expected to perform like everyone else.
