Search Engine Marketing Optimization

Search Engine Marketing Optimization

Chances are you are reading this article having done a search engines search on Search Engine Marketing or Search Engine Optimization or you may have even used the title of this article, Search Engine Marketing Optimization. Whatever you searched on you are possibly looking for ways to increase search engines traffic to your website or blog.

New sites need to be realistic in their expectations. If you target a single word term there is little chance of getting a high listing on any search engine. However if you optimize a webpage for a two, three or more words phrase (longtail keywords) you increase your chances significantly.

Taking as an example the search term ‘advertising’ a search on wordtracker reveals that at the time of writing this article there were 2,096 searches so lots of competition. However the term ‘advertising promotion’ returns 84 searches, less competition so much more likely that you could be found for the term provided you create some good content about the subject ‘advertising promotion’.

Dig a little further and you could write an article about ‘internet marketing promotion advertising’. This search term was searched 17 times, so even less competition and much more likelihood that your use of the search term ‘internet marketing promotion advertising’ in a well considered and readable article, will be found via a search engines search.

Hopefully you are catching on here. Target less competitive combinations of words (longtail keywords) and create several short articles about each term. Better still, create a webpage for each of the longtail keywords you identify.

In this article I have mentioned a few keywords and longtail keywords. The title ’search engine marketing optimization’ is one of the longtail keywords. The content of this article is built around a few select keywords. The next term I used is very competitive - search engines - that term alone was searched on 42,507 times, compare that with the 2,096 searches for ‘advertising’ and you will see just how much competition there is for ’search engines’. Then I followed up with ‘advertising promotion’, much more chance that this article will get a higher listing. Then finally I targeted ‘internet marketing promotion advertising’ the least competitive of the longtail keywords. This leads us to the next paragraph.

Keyword Research and Analysis - The Art of Internet Marketing
Do you know what your target audience wants and what they are looking for online? It is really important that you understand the need to optimize your web or blog pages for the search terms that your potential customers are looking for. There is little point in spending money and time designing a really attractive site that contains information on subjects that are of little interest to anybody but yourself.

Search Engine Marketing Optimization of your web or blog pages is all about ensuring that you rank well on search engines for the keywords and longtail keywords that are related to the theme of your website. If you want to get in front of your potential audience, first you need to know what search terms they are likely to use, and then ensure that the content of your pages reflect these terms. Remember the example I gave earlier involving the use of ‘internet marketing promotion advertising’ in preference to just ‘advertising’ or even ‘advertising promotion’.

Know what your target audience wants - optimizing your web pages for keywords that nobody uses in the search engines is useless. Instead, optimize for search terms using longtail keywords that you know potential visitors are using on search engines. You can find this information using wordtracker.

The content of your pages and metatags needs to reflect the terms that your potential visitors are using and the quality of your content needs to be of a good standard.

Search Engine Marketing Optimization - Feeding the Search Engines

Metatags - often overlooked and misunderstood. Metatags are elements of HTML coding. Metatags are what search engines use to help them determine what the site is about and assist with indexing. Most metatags are included within the ‘header’ code of a website. The most important tags are the title tag, description tag and the keywords tag. With so many search engines it is virtually impossible to rank for them all. Better to concentrate on the big three search engines - Google, Yahoo and MSN.

By reviewing or crawling your website content and metatags, search engines will find out what your web site is about. Therefore it is important to ensure that they - metatags - contain the information you want to be found for. A good ploy is to create a page for each of your longtail keywords. The page title could be the same as the longtail keywords you have identified, eg, Advertising Promotion. The description tag could contain the words ‘advertising promotion’ within the description, and ‘advertising promotion’ could be the first of the keywords metatag. For an example of this type of page structuring have a look at http://www.web-know-it-all.com or http://www.gr8articles.com.
