Shark Fishing...

I was SO excited. There is nothing I can think of that I would rather do that go out in a boat on the water. It feels incredibly free, skimming along the top of the water, rather like “riding off into the sunset.” That’s how it feels for me.

Well, yesterday, I got to go out in a boat on the water. I do not have a boat so I must depend on friends who do for my boat rides. Generously, some friends included me yesterday and we had the time of our lives. At least I did.

Now I am not a fisherperson. I have never fished in my life. But they said “we are going shark fishing. Would you like to reel ‘em in?” Since I had never reeled in anything in my life, I didn’t think starting with a shark would be a good idea, so I declined. But one of the people in our group said “I will, I will.”

We waited until the appropriate time of the evening, somewhere near dusk, to actually start the shark fishing. My hosts had all of the necessary bait and 2 fancy fishing poles. We were set! About 8:20 the nibbles started, slowly at first, then building up to really intense. “We’ve got one, we’ve got one…….oops, no he got away.” This happened about 6 other times. Then finally, finally, there were two that didn’t get away.

I whipped out my camera and started shooting, feeling like I was going to be featured on an episode of “Wild Kingdom.” It was incredibly exciting, even though they were “only about 4 feet long.” Boy, are they strong! Even one that small was fighting for dear life, thrashing about unbelievably as our captain was trying to just grab hold of his tail so we could take a closer look. I was all over the boat, “hold him up higher” and “can I get closer” and “hello there good buddy.” I was able to get 3 really cool pictures of the sharks before our captain cut them loose and threw them back into the water. But, wow, what a fun experience! And I DO have grandkids I can tell this to. Maybe when they are a little older?
