Shopping For Auto Insurance

When shopping around for auto insurance, make a decision on how much your excess or deductible will be, this is an important aspect to the price you will pay. The higher the deductible, the lower your premium will be, but just make sure you can pay the higher deductible if you file a claim.
No matter how careful a driver you are, this does not mean you will never be involved in an accident. A car could rear end you and the damages could be extensive.

Another important point to controlling the cost of auto insurance is liability, what you use your vehicle for, for instance commuting to work and also your driving record. Ask about discounts for air bags, anti-lock brakes, daytime running lights and anti-theft devices. It could happen that if you do not ask for it, the discount will not be offered.

Most companies will allow you to pay off your premium either monthly, quarterly or every six months, but this will increase your yearly premium. Your payment could increase every time you pay by installment.

Your auto insurance premium is based on the cost to repair your car, the current value and the possibility of it being stolen. Be aware that taking out auto insurance purely on price may not be in your best interest. If you do have an auto accident you want to be paid out, and you will want a broker or auto insurance company who will handle your claims fairly and efficiently.

If you have more than one car in the family, it will very often reduce your premiums if they are all insured under the same auto insurance policy; a point to note when getting quotes for auto insurance.

If you become divorced or widowed, you will need to reassess your auto insurance policy. Unfortunately, when you become a single person, your premium may be quite high. Your current auto insurance provider may have given you the best rate while you were married, but that doesn’t mean they will give you the best rate while single. Don’t just accept the new premium and shop around for the best current rate for a single person.

The vehicle you drive can also play a large role in your car accident. Passenger cars and light trucks accounted for nearly 95 percent of the 11 million vehicles involved in motor vehicle crashes in 2004

Accidents do happen, but you can follow some simple safety measures while driving. These include wearing your seat belt at all times, obeying the speed limit, being cautious of your surroundings and having auto insurance. By having auto insurance, you are able to protect yourself, your family, passengers and other drivers from incurring additional heartache and financial burden

If you retire, this is the perfect time to travel and you will want to review your auto insurance coverage. Also, with you not driving to and from work on a daily basis, your annual mileage will probably drop, and instead of having two cars you could possibly manage with one. This could assist in dramatically reducing your premium.

Would you believe, some auto insurers offer a 15% discount if you drive less than 7,500 miles a year. But beyond this distance, the price is fixed. People who drive 10,000 or 100,000 miles pay exactly the same premium. Wouldn't it be wonderful if all auto insurance companies offered this option? Low mileage drivers would pay very little for auto insurance. For instance, women who usually drive half as much as men could pay a whole lot less.

This could also encourage people to use public transport on some days and the environmental benefits of reduced fuel consumption would be considerable.
