Spring Break In the Bahamas
A small island with it's name meaning gateway is just that the gateway to the Bahamas. The smallest yet most seductive island of over 700 islands located in the Bahamas. This island is just 50 miles from Miami. Taking a charter flight out of Ft Lauderdale for a mere $75.00 is not the only way you can arrive in Bimini. You can also get charter boats to take you. My preference was the charter plane which only took 30 minutes. While you are flying out to Bimini you can look down at the crystal clear waters and pick out the charter boats and sail boats all headed for one of the most exciting places I have been in my lifetime. The small airport on Bimini only allows these small charter planes minimum distance to land but it was smooth. When you arrive you are greeted by Bahamians with a distinct British twang with a variety of other dialects added in. There were many adventures planned so I hurried to get on the bus to the hotel. When I say bus it is but going to the hotel was strange. It only took 5 minutes, if I had know that I would have walked, but better to know where you are. My arrival was due to the fact that this is a diver's paradise. There were a ton of extremely buff divers on my bus and they were all excited at seeing some of the world's most fascinating underwater formations. After a relaxing dinner including conch and craw fish which they called spiny lobster, I watched the sunset and the moon rise on each end of the island both coming and going at the same time. The sun had turned the sky a beautiful rainbow of red and orange colors which reflected off the ocean and made it look as if it were on fire. You do not have to dive to appreciate that. The next day's activities were planned and I was at the dock at 7:00 am sharp anxious and hopping to go. The charter boat was large enough to accommodate my scuba equipment along with the buff divers I mentioned earlier. We went out on the water and the first place we stopped was at a sunken naval ship. I do not remember the name of it but I knew I would not dive it. I am very adventurous but I am scared to death of getting eaten by Jaws (of which the movie was filmed in the Bahamas). Needless to say though the buffer's were not losing out. While they were diving I laid out on the front of the boat and appreciated the view. Not only of them but the nurse sharks and all the many varieties of fish in the ocean. When I looked down I felt as if I could touch the bottom just by extending my hand. After this dive was over they took us to a place in the middle of two of the islands of the Bahamas where there was a 200' or more drop. This was lesson time. There were several divers that wanted a lesson in diving deep, so they decided to take a 20 minute tour of absolute alien like depths. I decided to snorkel and look at the definition of the depth. I was like being in another world "outer space" I would call it. On we went to another dive location which was only 25 foot deep. I decided to go down as well on this one. There were several nurse sharks (if you do not know nurse sharks eat off the bottom and are harmless)on the bottom of which I was very interested. I went down to try and get them to let me run my hand over it's back. Of course it took off like a wild cat would. I watched the many conch's that the Bahamas are well know for and swam around the coral reef barrier which is the longest in the "world". Betcha did not know that did you? Why else would you even want to go to an island without checking out the ocean. Even snorkeling is exceptional. There is also a rock formation creating a path that some scientists think may the pathway to Atlantis. Fascinating! After our return we took a ferry bus to the North Island for a little dinner, dance and relaxing. You walk in the street and choose which restaurant you would like to eat at. I, loving craw fish, and now a new fondness for conch went in for a seafood restaurant. There were so many varieties of restaurants and even some American type dinners including steak. You can plan your activities or just sit back and relax. The islands are a variety of differing choices and you can hop from one to the other to enjoy whatever suits your pleasure. As for me I choose the Bahamas for the adventure of seeing the history of islands right outside the US. I love history and these islands are full of them. Not to mention some buff divers. |
