starting an exercise program
When starting an exercise program its important not to overdue it, this is a typical problem because most people go all or nothing when it comes to starting a fitness program, and this is why most people wait until a monday to start and quit by friday. To be successful you should start off for the first couple of weeks just doing cardiovascular exercise such as walking on the treadmill or biking, 3 to 4 times per week for 20 minutes at a moderate level, or lower if necessary to get acclaimated and back in to the routine. Once you have successfully gotten back in to some sort of routine then you can go ahead and add strength training to your routine, this is important because muscle burns fat, and strength training also increases bone density which could help fight osteoporosis in woman as they age. I recommend for a beginner that you start with circuit training this is where you do light weight and 15 to 20 repititions per set without resting between exercises. By circuit training you keep your heartrate up so you are burning more calories per workout, be sure to change your routine every 4 to 6 weeks so your body does not adapt to what you are doing if this happens you will hit a plateau and not see the same degree of results as when you first started.

Contributor's Note
I hope this is helpful, I was in the health club business for 15 years so I have forgot more about fitness than most people even know, so if you have questions let me know and will answer them.
