Swimming with turtles

One of the great thrills of snorkeling or scuba diving in tropical waters is being able to get close to the sea life. Colorful fish, sea turtles, dolphins all abound near the shores of many tropical islands.

Most people think that you need to pay for a tour to find a great place to snorkel, and of course the tour companies are not going to tell you different. That's not really true though, with a little research there are some great places to go on Kauai, and likely every Hawaiian island where you can hang out with the larger animals for free.

One place I found that was a great place to check out sea turtles was on Tunnels Beach in Kauai. This place was unique because it was an old lava bed. As the lava flowed it made large grooves that get deeper as you head out deeper, but start out only a few feet deep. Making it a very popular place for both fish and the large sea turtles.

One thing to make clear. It is illegal to chase, try to touch or otherwise molest the sea turtles. That's one of the things that make this place so great. As the turtles swim through the passages they end up swimming with in a few feet of you. You can take some great shots with just a cheap disposable underwater camera.

One of the other nice things about this beach is if you have little children or people that are afraid of swimming in deep water. The grooves go out for a couple hundred yards so you don't feel like your out in open water and it's easy to watch the kids as they hang out with all the colorful fish.

Sure beats paying $100.00 to be taken out in a boat where they think there will be turtles and you can't get close enough to even see them in a camera lens.
